What Is Lumecca IPL and How Does It Work?
Lumecca IPL is the most powerful IPL system currently on the market. This advanced system uses a specialized handpiece with a xenon flash lamp designed to deliver intense pulses of highly focused light energy directly to the skin. Through a process known as selective photothermolysis, Lumecca IPL penetrates deep into the skin to target specific skin concerns, such as sun damage or age spots, without disrupting the normal surrounding skin, helping to deliver a clear and healthy complexion. In addition, the strong sapphire cooling tip on Lumecca helps to protect the skin’s surface, offering a much more comfortable treatment experience when compared to other IPL treatments.
What Does Lumecca IPL Treat?
Lumecca IPL therapy is designed to treat pigmented and vascular lesions on the face or anywhere on the body, including:
- Age spots creating brown or red pigmentation
- Sun damage
- Freckles
- Vascular lesions, such as spider veins, port wine stains, and telangiectasias
- Rosacea
- Acne scarring
- Melasma
- Angiomas
- Superficial leg veins
- Venous malformations
Am I a Good Candidate?
Good candidates for Lumecca IPL will be in good overall health and have pigmented or vascular lesions that they feel self-conscious about. Lumecca IPL is not for everyone, and some contraindications can include:
- Recent suntanning or tanning bed exposure
- Taking medications that increase your sensitivity to light
- Light-induced seizure disorders
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Current or prior use of Accutane in the last six months
- Infection or open wounds in the treatment area
How Do I Prepare for a Lumecca IPL Treatment?
In the month before your planned Lumecca IPL treatment, it is important to prepare your skin. You want to avoid tanning beds and sun exposure for at least 3 to 4 weeks before your treatment. If you must be out in the sun, apply an SPF 30+ sunscreen regularly. Do not use self-tanning lotions or spray tans during this time as well. One week before your treatment, you should stop all skincare treatments that can be irritating to the skin, such as exfoliating scrubs, retinol, and glycolic acid. On your treatment day, your skin should be clean and free of makeup, lotions, creams, and sunscreens.

What to Expect at Your Treatment
When you come in for your treatment, you will be given protective eyewear to keep your eyes safe from the lights. We will apply cold gel directly to the treatment area before gently passing the Lumecca handheld device directly over the skin. As the treatment begins, you will see flashes of light and may experience a sensation similar to an elastic band snapping on the skin. How long your treatment lasts will depend on the condition we are treating and the surface area of the skin.
After your treatment concludes, you may experience a warming sensation, but this should subside within an hour or so. Over the next couple of days, you may see pigmented areas getting darker before eventually flaking off. If we treated vascular lesions, you may notice the veins blanching or changing color before they disappear.
When Will I See the Results of my Lumecca IPL Treatment?
For skin pigment concerns, you should begin to see results within a few days. As we mentioned, the areas may become darker before they flake off. Over the first two weeks, your skin will continue to change, becoming more even, with the most visible results appearing around 1 to 2 weeks after treatment. For vascular treatments, optimal results are seen two weeks after your treatment. While you will see results after one treatment, multiple sessions are often necessary to achieve optimal results.
FAQs
Will I need more than one session?
While you will see an improvement in skin appearance after one session, multiple sessions are often needed to achieve optimal results. How many sessions you may need vary depending on the type of treatment (pigments or vascular), the extent of any sun damage, your individual skin type, and the energy settings used for your treatment. When you meet with the professionals at Tao Wellness Med Spa, they will evaluate your skin and work to create an individualized treatment plan designed to meet your goals.
Are there any side effects?
While you may experience mild redness, swelling, and itching immediately after your treatment, this is normal and is a sign that the treatment was successful. This typically resolves within a few hours after treatment. You may notice a darkening of pigment spots before they flake off naturally. It is important to resist the urge to exfoliate and allow them to flake off on their own. You may also experience a sensitivity to sunlight immediately after treatment. If you experience severe itching or swelling, contact us immediately.
